We will be using self rising flour in lieu of yeast. My recipe is easy and quick to get you in and out of the kitchen fast to enjoy quality time with the family, but still giving you gooey and perfect cinnamon rolls!
Traditional cinnamon roll recipes will require you to use yeast. Yeast is a common ingredient that is found in dough as a leavening agent. Yeast eats sugars and starches in the dough mixture, and then releases gas which causes dough to rise and creates air pockets in the dough. Yeast takes about half an hour to two hours to rise, depending on the type of yeast. Factors such as type of yeast and temperature of environment effects the outcome of your dough in terms of how much it rises or if it rises at all. These factors are why I consider baking with yeast difficult.
My recipe uses self rising flour instead of yeast so you will not have to worry about the dough not turning out right! This self rising flour for cinnamon roll recipe makes it stress free to make your homemade cinnamon rolls from scratch in no time!
Cinnamon rolls are perfect for the holidays because the cinnamon aroma will fill up your house as it’s baking in the oven. There is not a single person I know that does not enjoy warm and gooey cinnamon rolls, so give this recipe a try at your next Christmas dinner or Thanksgiving meal!
Delicious Cinnamon Rolls without Yeast (from scratch)
Ingredients
Cinnamon Roll Filling
- 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons of white granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
- 4 tablespoon of butter, semi melted
Dough
- 2 1/2 cups of self rising flour
- 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup of melted butter
- 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- 1 cup of milk
- 2 egg yolks
Step 1
Prep your oven by preheating it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Prep your filling. In a bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar, 4 tablespoons of white granulated sugar, and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Set butter aside, we will be using this after we finish making the dough. Set filling mix aside.
Step 3
Make your dough. In a large bowl, mix together 2 1/2 cup of self rising flour, 2 tablespoons of white granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of melted butter, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, pinch of salt, 1 cup of milk, and 2 egg yolks. Use an electric hand mixer or stand mixer to mix everything together until smooth.
Step 4
Place your dough onto a clean working space. I placed a non-stick silicon baking mat on my kitchen table to put my dough onto. Lightly sprinkle and coat the baking mat with self rising flour. Use a rolling pin to roll and flatten out your dough to be 1/4″ thick. Try to roll the dough out close to an elongated shape.
Step 5
After the dough is all rolled out, use the filling’s semi-melted butter to spread all over your dough. Evenly sprinkle all your cinnamon roll filling on top of the spread out butter on your dough.
Step 6
Roll up the dough tightly starting from one of the longest side of the dough.
Step 7
Cut the dough into 8 or more equal rolls. Coat butter onto your oven proof dish. Arrange the rolls in your oven proof dish having the roll’s “tails” towards each other so that the rolls don’t unroll when baking.
Step 8
Bake in your preheated oven for 35 minutes. Optional to serve with icing.
