Dogs love a good meal, so why not make them some delicious, meaty meatball marinara for your dog? Watch your dog gobble this meal down! The recipe is a base for any pup friendly meatball marinara and I encourage you to customize the recipe to what you like, such as by adding in vegetables to the meatball, like peas or chopped carrots!
Meatball marinara is often associated with tomato sauce, but for my recipe I will be showing you how to make a dog friendly marinara base for your fella! Ripe tomatoes in small quantities are safe for dogs; however, marinara sauce uses a lot of tomatoes and due to tomatoes having high acidic levels, it might upset your dog’s stomach when he eats a whole bowl of meatball tomato marinara. Dogs have an alkaline stomach. The pH level of a dog’s stomach is higher than a human. According to research, canines have a pH of around 7.3 +/- 0.09, and humans have a pH of around 6.0 +/- 0.14. This means that since dog’s stomach is alkaline, you will want to use an ingredient that is not too high in levels of acid or else it might cause your dog heartburn.
My recipe base uses red bell peppers instead of tomato. Bell peppers have a pH level of 6.0-6.5; therefore, bell peppers lean towards an alkaline ingredient. Tomatoes have a pH level of 4.3 to 4.9; therefore, tomatoes lean towards an acidic ingredient. Using red bell peppers will save your fur baby from getting an upset stomach, but you’ll still get the vibe of the red look of tomato marinara sauce.
Meatball Marinara for Dog Recipe, Dog Friendly Meatball with Marinara Sauce
Serving Size = 12 (3 inch) meatballs
Meatball Ingredients
- 1 lb of lean ground beef
- 1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs
- 1/3 cup of milk
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
Dog Friendly Marinara Ingredients
- 1 large red bell pepper
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of water
Step 1
Prep oven by preheating it to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a thin layer of cooking oil or non-stick cooking spray to your baking tray.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine 1 lb of lean ground beef, 1 cup of Panko breadcrumbs, 2 large eggs, 1/3 cup of milk, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and use your hands to mix the ingredients together evenly.
Step 3
To form the meatballs, use your hands and scoop portions of meat out of the bowl and roll the meat mixture to form 3 inch diameter meatballs. Evenly place and space out the meatballs on your baking tray.
Step 4
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until fully cooked. Remove meatballs from the oven when it is fully cooked, and let them cool down before serving.
Step 5
Wash your red bell pepper then chop your bell pepper in quarters to remove all the pepper veins and pepper seeds. Wash bell peppers again to ensure that there are no traces of vein or pepper seeds left. Now cut the bell peppers into small pieces.
Step 6
Saute the peppers in a pan on the stove at medium heat for 10 minutes. I added in some water to prevent the pan from burning the bell peppers.
Step 7
Once peppers are soft, put the cooked peppers into a food processor or blender. Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and 1 tablespoon of water to the food processor or blender and blend everything until smooth.
Step 8
Plate the meatballs onto a plate and pour your bell pepper marinara sauce over the meatballs to serve.
