Knowing exactly what goes into your dog’s food is so important with today’s constant news about dogs getting sick from store bought dog treats and dog food. Well known dog food brands, such as Pedigree and Hill’s, has had several food recalls. According to the FDA on their “Recalls, Market Withdrawal, & Safety Alerts” page, the most recent well-known dog food brand that had a recall was Milo’s Kitchen for their dog treats due to potentially elevated levels of thyroid hormone. Be sure to keep up to date on dog food recall news by checking the FDA website.
I have two little dogs of my own that I love dearly! One of my two dogs is a senior dog. He has a sensitive stomach so I enjoy making fresh homemade dog treats for him whenever I can. Making homemade dog treats is not as time consuming as you think! Try making this easy dog treat recipe at home. It is such a rewarding feeling to see your dogs so happy to eat your treats! The best part is knowing exactly all the ingredients that go into your dog’s food and that there are no additives or preservatives!
Peanut butter is a safe for dogs to consume, but be sure to look for peanut butters that do not have xylitol as an ingredient. Xylitol is highly toxic for dogs. It is a chemical product that is often used as a sugar substitute. I like using peanut butter brands that only use peanuts as their ingredients and nothing else.
Homemade Dog Treats, Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe
Serving Size = 30 (3 inch bone shape) treats
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup water
Step 1
Prep oven by preheating it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Combine 2 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour, 2 large eggs, 1 cup of peanut butter, and 1/2 cup water into a bowl and mix well using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer until dough is smooth.
Step 3
Remove the dough from your bowl and place it onto a clean working space. I placed a non-stick silicon baking mat on my kitchen table to put my dough onto. Using your hands, kneed the dough a few times and get it into a ball. Use a rolling pin to roll and flatten out your dough to be 1/4″ thick.
Step 4
Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes in your dough. I used a dog bone shaped cookie cutter. If you do not have a cookie cutter, you can use an ordinary drinking cup as a cookie cutter. If you do not want to use a drinking cup to cut out your cookies, you can just roll 1.5 tablespoons of dough into a ball and flatten it on your baking tray to have the shape of a round cookie.
Step 5
Put all you cookies on a non-stick baking tray, and bake for 20 minutes in your preheated oven or until golden brown.
You can store the treats in a jar after it is fully cooled down. Do not store the peanut butter dog treats in the jar while hot because the heat will cause moisture to build up in the jar.
