What is hummus?

Hummus is a creamy spread and dip that is often found in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. The word hummus is the Arabic term for the legume pea called chickpea. The base of hummus is chickpeas, lemon, tahini, garlic, and olive oil. Hummus is packed with protein and fiber because the main ingredient is chickpeas. Chickpeas offer a great source of vitamins, protein, and fiber so it is often stated that hummus is a very healthy food option and healthy plant-based protein. A cup of chickpea provides approximately 10 grams of protein. Because chickpeas are high in protein, high in fiber, and provides complex carbs, it is great at satisfying your appetite and keeping your cravings at bay to help you maintain your body weight. Complex carbs stabilize your blood sugar, so it prevents your body from having sugar crashes and feeling tired. All these factors make hummus a great food to add into your diet!

Hummus is served with pita bread in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine, but it can be eaten with just about anything! I enjoy eating my hummus with Veggie Straws in the sea salt flavor. Veggie Straws chip have 30% less fat than regular potato chips but has the same crunchy chip texture. It is a great alternative to chips or pita bread if you are calorie conscious. If you want an extra healthy snack, enjoy your hummus with fresh vegetables such as carrots or celery.

To make creamy hummus at home, you will be needing a food processor or a high performance powder blender. Regular blenders may not be powerful enough to cream the chickpeas to make the extra creamy texture.

The difference between a regular blender and a powder blender is that powder blenders are specifically designed to pulverize and cream just about anything. Powder blenders are designed to maintain torque and cool temperature so it can handle tough ingredients. It is designed to give the you the smoothest texture when blending ingredients, so soups, smoothies, and ice cream are often blended in a high performance power blender. A brand of high performance powder blender that I recommend is the Vitamix. I own one myself. The Vitamix is easy to clean, gives the smoothest texture to anything I blend, and has a great warranty.

Another highly reviewed powder blender is the Ninja Blender, but I have not personally used it myself.
