My Best Shortbread Cookies Recipe

I’d like to show you how to make shortbread cookies with my easy shortbread cookie recipe!

Shortbread cookies are a classic cookie that anyone can enjoy. Often you will see people enjoying a shortbread cookie with tea, coffee, or milk. The buttery cookie can be even be elevated by adding toppings such as sprinkles or chocolate chips. I’ve made several batches of butter shortbread cookies before, but today’s recipe is my favorite recipe. It is a simple shortbread recipe using only four basic ingredients.

The origin of shortbread cookie can be traced back to Scotland. Its’ popularity grew and eventually expanded across the United Kingdom with all forms of variations to the traditional shortbread cookie. Shortbread cookies come in all shapes and sizes from round to square to rectangle. You can see the variation of shapes by looking at the famous shortbread cookie brand Walkers. Walkers has long their shortbread cookie in all sorts of shapes.  Bakers may often use cookie press to form decorative shapes to the shortbread cookie dough. I know that many beginner bakers may not own a cookie press; therefore, my instructions for today’s recipe will not be using a cookie press. You will be able to make these cookies simply by forming the dough with your hands like how you would when shaping other types of cookie dough. The flavor and texture will not be effected.

Shortbread cookies might sometimes be mistaken for sugar cookies due to the fact that the base ingredients used to make each cookie are the same. The main difference between a shortbread cookie and a sugar cookie is that shortbread cookies do not use egg, and the ratio of butter to flour is much larger in quantity than a sugar cookie. The abundance amount of butter is what makes the shortbread cookie have that delicious crumble.

Shortbread Cookie Recipe
Serving Size = 24 cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup of butter, at room temperature (1 cup equals 2 sticks of butter)
2 cups flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Ingredient:
Sprinkles

Step 1:
Prep your oven preheating the oven at 350 degree Fahrenheit.

Step 2:
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar with a hand mixer or stand mixer. Make sure there are no clumps and that your mixture is smooth.

Step 3:
Slowly add in 1 cup of flour at a time to your creamed butter and sugar mixture. Mix with your hand mixer or stand mixer until dough is smooth.

Step 4:
Add in the vanilla extract and mix well.

Step 5:
Use a spoon to portion out about 1.5-2 Tbsp of the shortbread cookie dough and shape it into a round ball. Place your dough balls onto your un-greased cookie sheet. Space out the cookie dough so that they’re not touching each other. Press the dough down to flatten the ball for an evenly baked cookie.

OPTIONAL STEP:
If you want to add sprinkles or any other forms of toppings, you may do so.

Step 6:
Bake for 10-12 mins in your preheated oven. Once cookies are done baking, allow the cookies to cool down.
